The phone rings. I am not amused. This is not my favourite way to wake up. My favourite way to wake up is to have a certain French movie star whisper to me softly at two thirty in the afternoon that if I want to get to Sweden in time to pick up my Nobel Prize for Literature I had better ring for breakfast. This happens rather less often than one might wish."-Fran Lebowitz
"They say that absense makes the heart grow fungus."-Barenaked Ladies
All I can safely say is that to live under the Grace of God is a predictably unpredictable thing. You should try it sometime. – Andrew Peterson
- As often as our culture tries to tell us what love is, I thought I would put down a little of what I believe love is not. Love is neither a 30-minute sitcom, nor is it a sappy pop ballad. Rather, it is the most difficult and most profound of human experiences, but thanks to our post-modern culture coupled with our own capacity for sin, it’s often much different than we would think. – Derek Webb
- At the end of your life, you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict, or not closing one more deal. You will regret time not spent with a husband, a friend, a child, or a parent. - Barbara Bush
- Bebo: My grandfather's name is Grover, he's a single man. Well, actually, he's got a girlfriend. They hold hands and everything...(audience goes 'awwww') Yeah, it's cute unless it's your grandfather, cause it sicks me out.
Christ loved the church enough to die for her, so we should love her enough to be patient with her." - Brian Habig
- Get to the end of me so I can get to the beginning of God.
I can taste the fruit of Eve. I’m aware of sickness, death and disease. The results of her choices were vast, Eve was the first but she wasn’t the last. And if I were honest with myself, had I been standing at that tree, my mouth and my hands would be covered with fruit of things I shouldn’t know, of things I shouldn’t see. – Sara Groves, Generations
I cry like someone dared me to. – Dave Barnes
It’s so silly the things we find to complain about. When there’s Thousand Island and French, but NO RANCH DRESSING for the salad, I complain. When there’s no ice for my coke, I complain. Meanwhile on the other side of the planet children go days without food. Christians meet in caves to worship God in order to avoid arrest or even execution. I snap myself out of selfish-mode when I think about these things. I say to myself, “people are starving to death everyday, and it doesn’t really matter if my favorite shirt got stained or not.” I’m rambling. – Andrew Peterson
I must find basis for my beliefs in Scripture, and not in my syllabus from Bible college. – Andrew Peterson

- I’m thankful for cheese in its many wonderful forms, for the fact that when you change the laundry your fingers are perfectly damp enough from the wet clothes to easily remove the lint from the dryer filter, for Peter Jackson, patty melts and the smell of sawdust. Also, I’m very thankful for an encouraging wife who happens to be as pretty as a flower, and for Aedan, Jesse and Skye, my children who show me daily by their simultaneously appalling and enduring scent that mankind is both far from glory and meant for it…I’m also thankful that my bellybutton is a part of my life. – Andrew Peterson, from the liner notes of Love and Thunder
- I should spend more time laughing at myself... I should spend more time laughing... Derek Webb
- Live your life so the preacher won’t have to lie at your funeral. Unknown
- Life is good, and God is good, and I’m a complete dirt-bag. – Andrew Peterson
Last night the three of us asked God to heal my knee. I woke up the next morning and you know what? It was still swollen. Sometimes it confuses me. I wonder why the Creator of the Universe would refuse to just snap His fingers and fix the knee, y’know? And then I think about the (seemingly) pointless suffering of hungry children that far surpasses any racquetball injury I could ever get, and I wonder why? Why wouldn’t God just fix it all? Then I picture myself lying in that puddle with the groceries and the bloody finger and the nice lady looking down on this fruitcake of a human and I remember just how foolish I am. If I’m moron enough to go riding on a shopping cart in the rain with a bad knee, I’m surely not capable of solving the Problem of Evil on this cold night. What a humbling thing it is to be human. I’d love to dig a little deeper, but I’m getting sleepy. – Andrew Peterson
- My wife would be jealous if I even so much went to McDonalds with a man who looked like a woman. – Kyle
- O to grace how great a debtor/Daily I’m constrained to be/Let thy goodness, like a fetter/Bind my wandering heart to thee/Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it/Prone to leave the God I love/Here’s my heart, now take and seal it/Seal it for thy courts above – Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
- There will be days when you don't feel "it". Being in love isn't a feeling, it's a union. ~C.S. Lewis
- Three Days Before Autumn – Andrew Peterson
Three days before autumn
A cold winter came
Blew in a telephone call when my friend went away
And I swear I heard thunder at the sound of his name
He never knew me at all, but I loved him the same
And it’s easy enoughTo say he’s better off
Chalk it up
To the luck of the draw
Life is tough
It was his time to go and that’s all
I don’t know about that,
‘cause… angels in heaven are dancing around To the music that I want to hear
And Im watching and wondering why
the silence is louder the harder I try
the winter came early this yearI stood in the kitchen
And I stared at the wall
And I prayed for some wisdom
So I could make a little sense of it all
And I thought about the seasons
How quickly they pass
How there’s little to do but hope
That the good ones will last
And this night is beautiful
I see the sky above the rain
And I think I hear the wind howling again
And I take comfort in know that this aint my home
And I know when Im lonely
That Im not alone
And I know hes singing at the foot of the throne
But that dont seem to matter down here
Because the winter came early this year
Three days before autumn

We’ve had every conversation in the world about what is right and what has all gone bad, but have I mentioned to you that this is all that I am, this is all that I have. I would like to share with you what makes me complete. I don’t claim to have found the truth, but I know it has found me – the only thing that isn’t meaningless to me is Jesus Christ and the way he’s set me free. – Sara Groves, Conversations
When it comes to the spiritual life, I am amazed how many of us don’t know how to dance. We stand before God, the music starts playing, and we are embarrassed by our incompetence…but Jesus cares more about desire than our competence .... (?)
Be the change you want to see in this world. – Ghandi
Be brief, be sincere, be seated. -F.D.R.
"A lot of people get flipped out if you're quiet. They say stuff like, What are you thinking? And if they don't start interrogating you, they start talking, going on and on about stuff that's totally irrelevant, and the silence gets so big and loud that it's scary."-A.M. Homes, Jack
Resentment is like eating rat poison and waiting for the rat to die. Anne Lamott

“I met a guy not long ago who was very conservative and had opinions all over him, and he was saying why God agreed with his political ideas and why that made his political ideas right. The whole time he was talking to me I was thinking about those guys in Africa, and I was feeling like this guy with the opinions was presenting a kind of Jesus who didn’t even exist. His Jesus was just an invention of his imagination, someone who more or less justified his polition concerning a lot of differnt political opinions. sitting there listening to him made me feel tired. People like that should have an island.” Donald Miller - Searching For God Knows What
“I had terrific ideas; I really did. I was going to write a story about a nun who takes over small third world countries by causing their evil dictators to fall in love with her, leaving a trail of magachurches and democracy in her wake. The book was going to be called Sister Democracy, Show Some Leg!“ Donald Miller
"Everyone feels benevolent if nothing happens to be annoying him at the moment." CS Lewis
"And Moses was right. god is not here to worship me, to mold Himself into something that will help me fulfill my level of comfort... I understand why people wear crystals around their neck and why they perform chants and gaze at stars. They are lonely. I'm not talking about lonely for a lover or a friend. I mean lonely in the universal sense, lonely inside the understanding that we are tiny little people on a tiny little earth suspended in an endless void that echoes past stars and stars of stars. And it's not like God has a call-in radio show." Donald Miller
I was watching BET one night, and they were interviewing a man about jazz music. He said jazz music was invented by the first generation our of slavery. I thought that was beautiful because, while it is music, it is very hard to put on paper; it is so much more a language of the soul. It is as if the soul were saying something, something about freedom. I think Christian spirituality is like jazz music. i think loving Jesus is something you feel. i think it is something very difficult to get on paper. But it is no less real, no less meaningful, no less beautiful" - Don Miller, "Blue Like Jazz" pg 239

" I believe in being fully present," Morrie said. " That means you should be with the person you're with. When I am talking to now , Mitch, I try to keep focused only on what is going on between us. I am not thinking about something we said last week. I am not thinking of whats coming up this Friday. I am not thinking about doing another Koppel Show, or about what medications I'm taking. I am talking to you. I am thinking about you."-Morrie ( Tuesdays with Morrie)

The reward for conformity was that everyone liked you except yourself.
Rita Maye Brown
"Anyone God uses significantly is always deeply wounded... We are, each and every one of us, insignificant people who God has called and graced to use in a significant way... On the last day, Jesus will look us over not for medals, diplomas, or honors, but for scars."
Brennan Manning in Ruthless Trust
"Since Jesus went through everything you're going through and more, learn to think and act like him. Think of your sufferings as a weaning away from the old sinful habit of always expecting to get your own way. Then you'll be able to live out your days free to pursue what God wants instead of being tyrannized by what you want."
I Peter 4:1-2 in The Message
"Everything that can be invented has been invented." --Charles H. Duell, Commissioner, U.S. Office of Patents, 1899.
We cannot understand the depth of the Christian doctrine of sin if we give to it only a moral connotation. To break the basic laws of justice and decency is sin indeed. Man's freedom to honor principles is the moral dimension in his nature, and sin often appears as lawlessness. But sin has its roots in something which is more than the will to break the law. The core of sin is our making ourselves the center of life, rather than accepting the holy God as the center. Lack of trust, self-love, pride - these are three ways in which Christians have expressed the real meaning of sin. But what sin does is to make the struggle with evil meaningless. When we refuse to hold our freedom in trust and reverence for God's will, there is nothing which can make the risk of life worth the pain of it. .. Daniel D. Williams (1918-1952), Interpreting Theology [1953]
"Feelings come and go, and when they come a good use can be made of them: they cannot be our regular spiritual diet." C.S. Lewis, The World's Last Night and Other Essays
"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7:14
The tragedy of life and of the world is not that men do not know God; the tragedy is that, knowing Him, they still insist on going their own way.
... William Barclay, The Revelation of John (Vol.II) [1961]
The greatest proof of Christianity for others is not how far a man can logically analyze his reasons for believing, but how far in practice he will stake his life on his belief.
... T. S. Eliot (1888-1965)
He works on us in all sorts of ways. But above all, He works on us through each other. Men are mirrors, or "carriers" of Christ to other men. Usually it is those who know Him that bring Him to others. That is why the Church, the whole body of Christians showing Him to one another, is so important. It is so easy to think that the Church has a lot of different objects - education, building, missions, holding services... The Church exists for no other purpose but to draw men into Christ, to make them little Christs. If they are not doing that, all the cathedrals, clergy, missions, sermons, even the Bible itself, are simply a waste of time. God became man for no other purpose. It is even doubtful, you know, whether the whole universe was created for any other reason. C. S. Lewis
Even if all the things that people prayed for happened - which they do not - this would not prove what Christians mean by the efficacy of prayer. For prayer is request. The essence of request, as distinct from compulsion, is that it may or may not be granted. And if an infinitely wise Being listens to the requests of finite and foolish creatures, of course He will sometimes grant and sometimes refuse them. Invariable "success" in prayer would not prove the Christian doctrine at all. It would prove something more like magic - a power in certain human beings to control, or compel, the course of nature. C. S. Lewis (1898-1963), "The Efficacy of Prayer"
It is no hard matter to adhere to God while you are in the enjoyment of His comforts and consolations; but if you would prove your fidelity to Him, you must be willing to follow Him through the paths of dryness and desertion. The truth of a friend is not known while he is receiving favours and benefits from us; but if he remain faithful to us when we treat him with coldness and neglect, it will be a proof of the sincerity of his attachment.
... Backhouse and Janson, A Guide to True Peace
Some people want to see God with their eyes as they see a cow, and to love Him as they love their cow - for the milk and cheese and profit it brings them. This is how it is with people who love God for the sake of outward wealth or inward comfort. They do not rightly love God, when they love Him for their own advantage. Indeed, I tell you the truth, any object you have in your mind, however good, will be a barrier between you and the inmost Truth.
... Meister Eckhart (1260?-1327?)

They are the things you get ashamed of, because words diminish them—words shrink things that seemed limitless when they were in your head to no more than living size when they're brought out. But it's more that that, isn't it? The most important things lie too close to wherever your secret heart is buried, like landmarks to a treasure your enemies would love to steal away. And you may make revelations that cost you dearly only to have people look at you in a funny way, not understanding what you've said at all, or why you thought it was so important that you almost cried when you were saying it. "Nothing in my life ever seemed to fade away or take its rightful place among the pantheon of experiences that constituted my eighteen years. It was all still with me, the storage space in my brain crammed with vivid memories, packed and piled like photographs and old dresses in my grandmother's bureau.
